About
Artist Statement
Some people practice yoga. Others meditate. Me? I make mosaics.
There is a unique rhythm to the process of creating a mosaic. When a piece is going well and I hit this rhythm it is like the stress and noise of the world around me fade away and I can lose myself completely in the color, texture and design of the piece.
In these quiet moments tiny bits of colored glass and stone come together to form larger, more recognizable forms. Smooth, shiny surfaces meet dull, rough surfaces creating interesting textural contrast. Flat, boring wood almost magically transforms into a glittering, sparkling image.
Every step of the process is rewarding...from the peaceful rhythm of the work to the excitement of wiping away the last little bit of grout haze and revealing the shining surface beneath.
With my current work, I am using my portraits to tell stories through facial expressions, settings, backgrounds and colors. I want each viewer to interpret these stories on a personal level based on their own lives and experiences.
